Head or Heart?

We often hear that we need to get out of our heads and into our hearts. It's tricky, though, because it doesn't mean simply lowering our equilibrium 15 inches from the head to the heart. To be in our hearts means to be in a completely new way. I don't know about you, but my mind goes forward and my heart goes sideways--open and closed. How does one get anything accomplished in the heart and not in the head? Can I run a business from the heart? The playing field of the heart is about trust. Other people in the company end up with more control because it is in them that trust resides. What happens if it's not there?

I often think about the trust the Sisters of St. Joseph place in the great love of God. It's not rational that throughout the centuries in male-dominated societies small groups of women without personal resources themselves built health care, education, and social service systems across the globe. Millions of people served every day to no financial benefit to the women themselves. What kind of leadership is this—head or heart? Both?

The world is in a time of tremendous change. The global economy is rocky; seats of power are shifting as well. How does this changing world look when you are in your head ? How does it look when you are in your heart? What if we each decide to act more from our heart? Let me think....

Head: To keep the economy healthy, consumerism must continue.

Heart: Continue to buy, but not for yourself.

What if the answer is simply, love...love God and neighbor without distinction. Could a global economy thrive on this? My response?

Possumus, of course.
