RE: Safe Crossings
When I was a new student to a school as a sixth grader, my teacher did me the very big favor of asking me to be on the school patrol. Thank goodness it was no longer a vocation limited to only boys! I met one of my best friends by being on patrol with her. One day I even had my picture in the newspaper wearing a big furry black hat and holding the stop sign flag. I had no idea a Sister of St. Joseph had started this program, though one of my grandpa's sisters was a Sister of St. Joseph. Knowing this fun fact is particularly interesting as I make my way through a discernment journey. Will the flag say stop or go?! Either way, I trust God to keep me safe.

Deb, her name was Sister Carmela Hanggi. She started the school patrol so her kids could cross the street from the old Cathedral School to go to mass at the Cathedral when she was the principal there. There's a flag pole dedicated to her near the corner of Selby and John Ireland Blvd. She was my dad's cousin, so we got to hear stories about her when I was growing up.

Wow! How cool that it was a Catholic nun who started school safety crossings!

Chalk up another good service to mankind from Catholic sisters!

My sister was a patrol guard in the fifth grade. She wore a uniform and everybody was proud of her.

I think it has to instill confidence in those who choose to be a patroll guard. Even my mother's co - workers who would be driving to work in the morning would comment to my mother at work that they saw my sister.
